Brief Description
Talk Therapy Television, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) private charity that has developed and broadcast television programming promoting mental and behavioral health awareness in New York State since March 2010. We promote mental and behavioral health awareness, prevention and treatment including recovery from addiction. The goal is to educate the public, fostering a dialogue and conversation about the resources available for the prevention, intervention, and treatment of mental and behavioral illnesses while also reducing the stigma associated with each.
Situation
During his second-year internship at a psychiatric hospital, Jacob Berelowitz, Founder and Executive Director of Talk Therapy TV, identified a serious problem. Part of his role was to provide individual and family psychotherapy to clients at the hospital, but many of them didn't have even a basic understanding of what mental illness was.
Often they had not sought out help until it was an emergency situation because they had not recognized the warning signs of mental illness or did not understand how any available treatments could help. Berelowitz was determined to find a way to change this lack of information or misinformation as much as possible.
Solution
Talk Therapy TV began producing mental and behavioral health awareness programming, which we broadcast on public access television to educate the public at large. In order to broadcast the programming we continue to acquire additional public access television broadcast stations. Additionally, each episode of Talk Therapy TV is provided on demand on our Web site as well as being available on our YouTube video channel, Vimeo video channel, and Facebook.
In addition, we have developed the Quick Fact Receipts campaign which provides behavioral and mental health facts on the back of grocery store receipts. This campaign utilizes major chain grocery stores to distribute these facts to shoppers throughout New York City.
Results
The combined total of public access television subscribers that we are able to reach is currently at 1,660,000. Each of our episodes is broadcast to this market twice a week. This cumulative number is representative of the numbers reported to us by each broadcast station.
Our Quick Fact Receipts campaign distributes a cumulative total of 350,000 receipts per week. As of April 2011 we have been able to distribute over 6,000,000 facts to New York shoppers.
